Yellow And Green Flower Arrangement

This is the second of a series of three large flower paintings, all sparked by a book of drawings by Jim Dine. Where its sister painting with the orchid is soft and misty, this one is full of fresh spring light.

Washes of lemon yellow and meadow green glow behind a loose gathering of stems, all drawn in quick, confident charcoal. There are sprigs of lavender, pointed bramble leaves, a lacy white flower head like elderflower or cow parsley, and trailing strands of round silvery leaves. Two simple blocks, one dark and one pale, hint at vases, or perhaps a shelf by an open window.

What makes it special is the mix of drawing and painting. You can see every decision Rachel made: lines left visible, layers scraped back, a scribble in the corner. It feels like a garden gathered in a hurry and brought indoors, still full of air.

At a full metre square, glazed and framed, it's a calm, uplifting presence for a living room, a hallway or a bedroom. It would look wonderful on its own, or hung alongside its sister paintings, Flower Arrangement with Orchid and Red Hot Pokers.
