Seen with a birds eye view, a moment just before a wave breaks when everything holds its breath. The water darkens. The foam stretches and laces itself across the surface in patterns too fleeting and too complex to ever truly catch.

Rachel Jeffery has captured that suspended moment with extraordinary fidelity. The white form moves across a ground of the deepest ocean blue, finding its own path, following its own logic. Below, layers of teal, aquamarine and pale celadon suggest the shallow water rushing beneath the wave. Tiny flashes of coral appear — unexpected, intimate, perfectly placed.

This is a painting that could only have been made by someone who has spent a lifetime watching the sea. And it could never be made again.
