Mixed media on board. 33 x 33 x 3 cm (framed)
Porthleven's harbour is one of the oldest and largest in Cornwall, and famously Britain's most southerly working port. It was built to shelter boats from the full force of the Atlantic, and anyone who has seen those dramatic photographs of storm waves crashing clean over the village clock tower will know exactly what kind of sea it stands against.
But it wasn't the harbour walls alone that made me want to paint it.
This painting is my response to the boulders just around the corner at a nearby cove. The foreground is built from layered, collaged pebble forms, moss greens, sea teals, slate greys, a flash of warm pink, every one made individually, the way the sea makes every real pebble individually. Behind them, the dark harbour wall stands against a restless, silvery sea, with the weather moving through the sky the way it always seems to be at Porthleven.
It's a painting about strength and softness together: the immovable old harbour, and the countless boulders and stones that eventually move in as the water is forever rearranging.
This piece comes ready to hang in its frame.
Materials + Care
For original paintings: painted on canvas or board using acrylic, resin or mixed media. Hang away from direct sunlight and damp. Dust gently with a soft dry cloth. Do not clean with water or solvents. For canvas prints: printed on a poly-cotton blend canvas with a matte/satin finish, scratch, crack and warp resistant. Wipe gently with a barely damp cloth if needed. For paper prints: printed on premium fine art paper. Handle with care — avoid moisture and direct sunlight to preserve colours.
