Cove Textures 2

Mixed media on board · 50 x 50cm

One of Rachel's Cove series, made in response to her local cove in Cornwall. Rather than painting the view, she gathered the patterns, textures, shapes and motifs she found there, and pieced them together to give an abstracted sense of the place.

A dark form like a cave mouth or a shadowed rock sits at the top left. Through the middle runs a stream of pale water and a cascade of pebble-like circles in grey, teal and white, like foam or stones rolled smooth by the tide. Around them, layers of ochre sand, lichen green, chalky white and a deep slab of slate blue build up like the strata of a cliff face.

It's built in many layers of paint, collage and texture, so there's always something new to find: a scratched line, a printed pattern, a patch of bright lime like seaweed catching the sun.

A rich, characterful piece at a size that fits almost anywhere, from a hallway or a study to a cosy corner of the living room.

Also available as a canvas print.
