My Artistic Process
Every artist will have their own artistic process. Art shows what we are interested in. We dwell that which moves or excites us. It is this that drives our creativity.
My process has 3 stages focused on gathering information, channeling my focus through use of my development book to create motifs and play with compositions before finally arriving at something I am happy with to create a final “painting".
These are my three stages of creating a painting.
Step One - Gathering Information
The first stage of my process - here is a video of the main source of inspiration for my next series of work. I take you on a journey across Rinsey Cove in Cornwall, wittering on about what it is that I am interested in - competing with the sounds of the wind and sea. I am finding inspiration, looking for motifs, shapes and textures that capture my attention.
I also like to take 100’s of images at this stage to take back to my studio and inform me at the next stage of my process.
Step Two - Developing Ideas
The next stage of my process is focused on developing ideas.
I once listened to an artist talk about how he found it boring to paint a car - to see a car and paint it. So, he decided to take his car apart and draw each part, then compose a painting “about” the car rather than “of” it. This effectively describes the way that I work.
I deconstruct the images that I gather and then I reassemble them to interpret my concept.
Step Three - Time to Paint!
The final stage of my process is where I bite the bullet and make a painting.
I choose an image from my Development Book to either copy or reinterpret, depending on how I feel about it.
